What is the difference between woven and non-woven carrier bags?
When choosing the right carrier bag for your company or campaign, you quickly come across the terms woven and non-woven. But what exactly is the difference between these two types of carrier bags? And which one suits your application best? In this blog, we list the features, advantages and applications of both bags. We also zoom in on an important theme of today: sustainability.
Woven carrier bags: strong and robust
A woven carrier bag is made of woven polypropylene (PP), a plastic material in which the fibres are woven over and under each other in a pattern. This creates a strong, durable structure that can withstand wear and tear and heavy loads.
Key properties of woven carrier bags:
- Woven structure gives extra strength
- Often glossy or laminated finish
- Easy to print with eye-catching designs
- Reusable and water-repellent
Woven bags are often used as premium promotional bags, shopping bags or as durable goodie bags at events. Their sturdy nature makes them ideal for situations where reuse and reliability are important.
Non-woven carrier bags: light and versatile
Non-woven bags are also made of polypropylene, but without a weaving process. Instead, the fibres are thermally or chemically bonded together. The result is a light and flexible material with a softer texture than woven bags.
Features of non-woven carrier bags:
- Lightweight and flexible
- Matt look or laminated
- Economical in production
- Suitable for one-off campaigns or short-term use
Non-woven carrier bags are popular for trade shows, open days or as giveaway bags. They combine functionality with low weight and attractive price, and can be custom-made in a variety of colours and sizes.
Pros and cons in a row
Although both bag types are made of the same basic material, they differ greatly in appearance and use:

Sustainability: more than reusability
Sustainability with carrier bags is not only about the material, but also about how and how often the bag is used. Woven bags are often in the best of hands here: they last longer, are reused more often and are thus a worthy alternative to disposable plastic.
