Packaging in three layers: what you need to know about primary, secondary and tertiary packaging
Packaging is more than just putting a product in a box. Behind every item lies a smart, three-layer structure, each with its own function. Protection, presentation and transport all come together in the world of primary, secondary and tertiary packaging. In this blog, you’ll discover what each layer does and why understanding this structure makes a real difference for anyone who manufactures, packs or ships products.
1. Primary packaging: what you hold in your hands
Primary packaging is what you, as a consumer, see and touch. Think of a can of soda, a jar of jam or a tube of toothpaste. This layer has three key functions:
- Protecting the product from external influences
- Displaying practical information such as ingredients and shelf life
- Presenting the product attractively on the shelf
That first impression? It’s made with this layer.
2. Secondary packaging: the practical bundler
This layer groups multiple products together. Think of a cardboard box containing several carrier bags or a film that holds multiple smaller shipping bags together. Secondary packaging:
- Facilitates transport and storage
- Keeps products neatly together on the shelf
- Is often removed before the point of sale
An indispensable link between producer and retailer.
3. Tertiary packaging: the transport champion
The outermost layer, usually invisible to the end consumer. Think of pallets stacked with boxes and wrapped in film. Tertiary packaging:
- Protects large quantities during transport
- Ensures stable stacking in warehouses and trucks
- Enables efficient loading and unloading
Without this layer, safe and smooth bulk transport would not be possible.

A well-designed three-layer packaging structure prevents damage, reduces costs and makes your process more sustainable. Marisan supports you with solutions at every level, from label to pallet. That way, your product arrives solid, neat and safe.
